Many of us know how we should sit at our desks, with straight backs and knees at a 45 degree angle most of us but rarely do it. We slouch or slump in our chairs and may not even have the chair itself configured correctly.

It's certainly not breaking news that sitting down is bad for us. In the last few years there has been plenty of evidence to suggest that all this sitting is bad for our health. It even been named the 'sitting disease' likening it's ill effects to the discovery of the side effects of smoking.

Researchers from the University of Missouri found that too much sitting is a direct cause of weight gain and a study by the Diabetes Group at the University of Leicester has found that sitting at a desk all day damages your long-term health regardless of overall fitness. So no matter what you do outside of work to keep fit and healthy, if you are sitting for long periods, you are still at risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and several cancers.

The whole concept of sitting at a desk is a modern innovation. Victorian clerks could stand at their desks and "moved around a lot more" but during the 20th sitting down was favoured over standing up as it enabled people to be supervised that much easier.

With all this evidence about the associated dangers to our health sitting down and changes in workplace practices, the commercial need for height adjustable sit/stand desks is picking up pace.

Height adjustable sit/standing desks allow you to choose what's best, depending on how they feel during different times of the day. You can adopt a regular stand and sit routine to relieve stress on your spine and keep you cardiovascular system going strong, strengthen your muscles, and reduce the risk of spinal shrinkage. Users have reported a considerable reduction in aches and pains, a general improvement in well-being and increased creativity and overall productivity.

As standing requires more energy than sitting, the calories burned up over a course of a day, week, month and year and significantly higher than when sitting, giving it great weight-loss benefits too!

At Trevor Blake, we can offer a choice of height adjustable sit/stand desks as part of your office furniture package. Speak to us to arrange a quote based on your requirements and budget.
