About Historic Eton Fives Court at Charterhouse

The historic Eton Fives Courts at Charterhouse had previously fallen into decline with some having been altered to provide storage for the maintenance department. With an increased interest in the handball game of Eton Fives over recent years, the Development team were keen to bring forward the pace of development of this hidden jewel on the Charterhouse campus to provide full use for participants of the sport. Offering further opportunity at the independent school to accommodate the rising popularity of the game.

Eton Fives Refurbishment Project Brief

TB Fit Out (Trevor Blake) were instructed to undertake the refurbishment of an Eton Fives Court At Charterhouse that had previously been used as a store room for many years. Alongside additional decorating and lighting works to 5 other Courts and the widening of an opening to build two new entrances to washroom facilities as well as the facilities themselves.

From robust wall finishes to precision space planning and long-lasting materials, every element was considered to enhance usability, safety, and aesthetics. The result — a revitalised space where students can compete, train, and thrive for years to come.

Throughout our project works we consulted with JP Courts and would like to also recognise the design and scope of works which was created by Conceptworld LTD.

Charterhouse Eton Fives Court PROJECT WORKS

Preserving Charterhouse’s legacy while upgrading facilities for today’s sporting standards. Project Works included;

  • The Eton Fives Court project works involved digging up the concrete floor, installing a new sub base and then Sandstone Paving stones in set sizes of 1000mm x 1000mm x 50mm thickness - Honed top face along with new kerbs.
  • The works also involved blocking up an existing opening to the rear of the court and rendering the entire back wall using Keim Uniputz 0.6 (Universal Render-Fine).
  • All walls were then fully prepared and then painted using Keim Soldalit.
  • The play lines and Charterhouse Crest were then painted on.
  • The existing mesh above the play lines were removed and replaced using white 20mm mesh knotless netting from Huck Nets. With this fixed in place it was finished off by installing Cedar battens which were then painted white.
  • The court also had lighting replacements with Ansell IK10 impact resistant LED light fittings, which were then programmed to the preference of the client.
  • Whilst on site undertaking this work, we were also asked to undertake the refurbishment of 5 additional courts. This work involved the lighting replacement, and redecorations to match the Court we were initially instructed to do.
  • Alongside the original works we were tasked to undertake a minor refurbishment of the toilets. This involved creating 2 new openings which formed new entrances to the Male and Female changing rooms. New external doors were installed to these openings, the vinyl floors were replaced and changing rooms redecorated. The original entrance door was retained and a new visitor toilet was formed to this area.

Our aim was to use high-quality, low-maintenance finishes for long-term resilience and functionality.

Eton Fives Court Project Outcomes

The successful outcome of the project works has enabled Charterhouse to open the revitalised space to the enjoyment of individuals whom can play the game of Eton Fives in a refurbished space designed and built to endure many rounds of this growing team sport.
