Project Overview

A well-designed school gym should do more than provide space for physical activity. It should support a variety of sporting disciplines, encourage participation and create an environment where pupils can develop their confidence, coordination and physical wellbeing.

At Sutton High School, TB Fit Out was appointed to enhance an existing gym space through the installation of specialist safety mirrors and solid beech ballet barres, creating a more functional and adaptable environment for pupils and teaching staff.

The improvements were designed to support a wider range of physical activities while maintaining the safety, durability and quality expected within a busy independent school.

The Project – Enhancing a Multi-Purpose Gym Space

Educational sports facilities need to work hard. From structured PE lessons and dance to stretching, conditioning and other fitness activities, having the right equipment and environment can make a meaningful difference to how a space is used.

For Sutton High School, the project involved installing Pilkington Optimirror safety-backed mirrors, carefully manufactured with precision waterjet cut-outs to accommodate solid beech barres.

The natural timber barres were securely mounted using contrasting black brackets, providing a practical support feature while introducing a clean, contemporary finish to the gym.

Together, these elements enhanced the functionality of the existing space without requiring a complete refurbishment.

The Transformation – Supporting More Ways to Move

The introduction of full-height-style mirrored surfaces and solid beech barres (with mirror dimensions tailored to the gym) has created opportunities for the space to accommodate a broader range of activities.

The mirrors provide visual feedback, helping pupils observe posture, positioning and technique during movement-based exercises. This can be particularly valuable for activities such as dance, stretching and controlled fitness routines.

The solid beech barres offer stable support for balance, flexibility and coordination exercises, while the safety-backed mirror specification is appropriate for a setting where pupil safety is an important consideration.

Key benefits of the gym enhancement include:

  • Greater versatility: Supporting dance, stretching, balance work, fitness and other movement-based activities within one space.

  • Improved learning opportunities: Mirrored surfaces allow pupils to observe and refine their movements during practical sessions.

  • Support for physical wellbeing: A more adaptable environment encourages varied forms of exercise and physical development.

  • Durable, quality materials: Solid beech barres and specialist safety-backed mirrors provide a robust solution for regular educational use.

  • A refreshed appearance: The combination of reflective surfaces, natural timber and black brackets creates a clean, purposeful aesthetic.

The Outcome – Small Improvements, Lasting Value

Not every educational refurbishment needs to involve major structural changes to make a difference.

At Sutton High School, a focused investment in specialist gym equipment has enhanced the existing facilities and expanded the ways in which the space can be used.

For pupils, the improvements provide a more supportive environment for learning new skills, developing movement techniques and taking part in a variety of physical activities. For teaching staff, the enhanced facilities offer greater flexibility when planning and delivering practical sessions.

The result is a gym space that better supports the school's sporting and wellbeing activities, demonstrating how carefully considered improvements can add meaningful value to educational environments.
